Prospective CPA’s—Be Quick and Creative and Win a Great Scholarship

Once again the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has come up with a creative approach to attracting high school students to the accounting profession.

Following up on last year's "Project Innovation" scholarship competition, the AICPA is asking students to use their imaginations and come up with an idea for a hit TV show—starring a CPA.  Think CSI, only for accountants!

The goal is to develop a “preview script” and a two-page “pitch” for a TV show including a title, summary, and characters.  And given where they’re coming from, it’s not surprising that the AICPA also wants to see a budget and a marketing plan.

And what are you competing for?  Scholarships and grants for your school!

To enter, you'll need to form a team of two to four classmates and a faculty advisor willing to support the effort. Each student on the team must meet basic eligibility requirements like being the right age (someplace between 15 and 19) and agreeing to the terms of a basic release form.

Up to 10 teams will be selected as finalists. Those teams will receive a video camera and will be asked to use their script to produce a three-minute preview of their pilot.  Pilots will then be posted online, and the public will be allowed to vote as part of the selection process.

Your team will need to come up with a brilliant idea, describe it in a short proposal, and put together a pilot script. And it all needs to be submitted by no later than December 21, 2012.

This is a great project for student members of local DECA high school chapters who already participate in team competitions and activities. And not only will scholarships be awarded to students, but the sponsoring school also wins funds!

There's no question about it. You're going to have to be inventive and super creative.  Take a tour of the Start Here Go Places website for some ideas.  You can learn about accounting and get a heads up on other scholarship programs open to students interested in pursuing careers in accounting.

For more information on Project Innovation, visit the "Start Here Go Places" website. But hurry. The contest ends December 21st!
